Passkey Login: A Simple and Secure Alternative to Passwords
Have you ever forgotten your password or struggled to remember a complex one? Do you want to sign in to your online accounts faster and more securely? If you answered yes, then you might be interested in passkey login, a new feature that Google has introduced for its users.
Passkey login is a way of signing in to your Google Account with your fingerprint, face scan, or device screen lock, like a PIN. Passkeys are unique to each device and account, so they provide the strongest protection against threats like phishing. You don’t need to remember or type any passwords, just tap or scan your device and you’re in.
Passkey login works on supported devices that run at least Windows 10, macOS Ventura, ChromeOS 109, iOS 16 or Android 9. You also need a supported browser like Chrome 109 or up, Safari 16 or up, or Edge 109 or up. Your device must have screen lock and Bluetooth enabled. You can create passkeys on multiple devices, including laptops, desktops, mobile phones, and hardware security keys that support the FIDO2 protocol.
To create a passkey, go to g.co/passkeys and follow the instructions. You may need to sign in to your Google Account or verify it’s really you. Once you create a passkey, you can use it to easily sign in to your Google Account and to verify it’s you when you make sensitive changes. You can also create a passkey on an external FIDO2 capable USB security key.
To use your passkey to sign in on a different device, go to the Google sign-in page and enter your email address. Then, on your device with a passkey, tap the notification that says “Sign in with your device”. Confirm your identity with your fingerprint, face scan, or device screen lock. That’s it! You’re signed in without entering any passwords.
Passkey login has many advantages over passwords. It’s faster, easier, and more secure. It eliminates the hassle of remembering and typing passwords. It protects you from phishing and other online attacks. It works across different devices and browsers. It also integrates with Google’s 2-Step Verification and Advanced Protection Program for extra security.
